Grooming of girls and Asian gangs

Having led a vocal and strong campaign over the past four years against the crime of grooming I am heartened that CEOP have produced this report. I strongly believe that without the fantastic coverage of the Times Newspaper and with my commentary piece we may have not be where we are, I am proud that we initiated a national debate which has led to this report. My only hope is that this report is now followed up with lasting action.

The Ramadhan Foundation provided extensive evidence to CEOP and welcomes the inclusion of some parts of our evidence. Since I raised this in January 2011 and with the media coverage of recent convictions; I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received from the Asian community and their total abhorrence at these sick crimes.

Let me be clear, there are Asian gangs operating in this country who are grooming white teenagers, these gangs think that white girls are less valuable than girls from their own community which is sick and abhorrent. The Asian community have offered their revulsion at these crimes many times and we do so again today; for as long as these girls suffer I will continue to speak out whatever the cost.

I welcome the report’s finding that these crimes are not exclusively an Asian problem, CEOP’s findings that 20% of culprits are Asian, which means 80% are not Asian, this is what we have been saying all along. I ame disappointed that the media and Politicians seem to only focus on the Asian cases when we should be tackling all these criminals regardless of ethnicity or culture. It is time for politicians and commentators to address this issue with honesty and remember this is about saving young girls lives and not grabbing headlines.

There needs to be more preventive work in the community with young girls, telling them of the signs of these crimes and how to prevent getting involved, an immediate stop to the over sexualisation of children, parents and the police taking responsibility for young teenagers when they are wandering the streets at late hours. Ultimately the people responsible are the criminals who groom young girls and as we have seen already the Courts have given long sentences to criminals and long may this continue. It is just not good enough to express the revulsion to these crimes with words but as we move forward all communities will need to be channelling that anger and disgust into helping the Police.

If through this hard work and bravery I have been able to save one young life then the struggles and threats we have received over the past four years have been worth it. There should be no hiding place for these evil people and only together can we stop them.

UK Government new Prevent strategy

The threat from terrorism is real and events like this require communities and Governments to come together to tackle this evil menace from our country. Sadly the Government’s new Prevent strategy seeks to promote the same worn out policy that has failed to achieve success and has led to alienation in the Muslim community

To label all Muslims who promote and practice Sharia law as extremists is a dangerous precedent which will be strongly opposed by our community because the real reasons behind this new strategy is to score cheap political points on the back of the Muslim community. With respect to the Prime Minister and his Ministers Freedom, Democracy, human rights and equality are not British values, they are human values that are enshrined in many faiths including Islam. Adopting a heavy handed approach will lead to more mistrust, division and is not the right strategy to protect our country from terrorism and extremism

Sharia law is a central pillar of our lives for Muslims and nothing any Government Ministers say will stop us using Sharia law to ensure we support our neighbours (Muslim and non Muslim), help the needy in our society, promote equality, fairness and justice.

Holding extremist views is not illegal, just look at the EDL and BNP, this Prevent strategy must be about tackling those extremists that use terrorism and brainwash people and also include the evil of the far right.

This dangerous escalation of attacks on Islam and Muslims will lead to further division and make the task of tackling extremism more difficult. It is interesting that the Government has no strategy to deal with the evil far right like the EDL and BNP. Over the past two years millions of pounds have been wasted in public funds policing these extremists who march our streets and attack our faith and community – no mention of how this Government will deal with these fanatics

The Liberal Democrats spent many years in opposition decrying Labour’s Prevent strategy often urging dialogue and engagement with the Muslim community and not demonisation but now in Government they sit silently as the Conservatives demonstrate their machoism. They should be ashamed of themselves and the Muslim community will not forget their silence in a hurry. Nick Clegg and Liberal Democrats have failed to stand up for their liberal values and this is a sad day for Liberalism.

The Muslim community will continue to take on the terrorists and we will work with the Police and Intelligence Agencies and will not rest until our country is safe from these evil crimes, the terrorists do not act in the name of Islam. But we will strongly oppose attacks on our faith and community from whatever quarter.

Pastor Jones should be banned from the UK

The decision of the fascist EDL to invite US Pastor Terry Jones to the UK demonstrates Mr. Jones real agenda of racism and fascism and his presence here is not conducive to good community relations in the UK. We are a tolerant and peaceful society that prides itself on its diversity and are keen to see communities come together not be ripped apart.

I am a strong defender of free speech but when someone who will incite hatred towards Muslims and furthermore there is a real threat of violence then the Government must ban that person. I would remind Mr. Jones that the UK is proud of British Muslims, our heritage and our contributions here. We are an integral part of our great country and if you come here to promote hatred and division then stay home.
Mr. Jones claims he is a man of Christianity but the great faith of Christianity teaches tolerance, respect and Jesus came to eradicate racism not encourage it – Mr. Jones’s comments and actions run counter to Christianity.

The Home Secretary must not hesitate to ban him from entering the UK, if this does not happen then the Government will be responsible for the division that will ultimately happen if he is allowed to come.

Sir Cyril MBE - My Personal tribute

When I turned five, a party was thrown for Sir Cyril Smith for Christmas and his service to Rochdale by my later father in the Mosque in Deeplish. I can vividly remember Cyril appear and he was the sort of man who you could not fail to notice. He stayed for over two hours talked to everyone and ate a lot of Samosas! but listened to all the problems of people and promise to help them. This was my first memory of community politics and many years later I know there was no one better than Cyril to demonstrate this.

When I decided to get active in politics I joined the Labour Party in March 1997 as I was active in the National Union of Students and it seemed like many others I wanted to be a part of history. When David Blunkett introduced Tuition fees I resigned in disgust as Mr. Blunkett visited Manchester University during the election promising not to introduce tuition fees. It was around this time that I made contact with Cyril again after an absence of many years. I rang him and he was so happy to hear my voice that he invited me to Emma Street to discuss matters and I arrived with Cyril in his front room reading the Daily Mail – not a great impression of a Liberal!

I reminded him of that first memory and my father who had died many years earlier, and after such a long time he went on to tell me about how great my father was and how he enjoyed the parties every year – now for a politician to remember such matters was something that made me realise he was special – of course he would get it wrong sometimes, but his heart was in a good place and he always put Rochdale first. I spent many hours listening to his stories about his life and what life in Rochdale was like during the early 60’s and 70’s when my father arrived, but he always tried to get me to join the Liberal Democrats which I somehow politely declined.

When I moved to London and worked for a period with Simon Hughes MP that I started thinking about liberalism, equality and social justice. The very issues that I spoke to Cyril about – in the end I joined the Party and remember ringing Cyril up and he was so excited and happy that I had joined and he wrote me a nice letter telling me how to move ahead. What amazed me was the time he was still giving to people like me, I lost count the amount of calls he took when I visited him or the letters he wrote – and he had retired from elected office!!

When some years later I returned to Rochdale he pushed me to stand for the Executive and Vice Chair, which I did. It was during this time that there were some major disagreements about certain individuals who were on a mission to destroy their colleagues, I made some naïve mistakes but was strongly of the view that I was making the right decisions – when things got ugly he was there for him, offering some amazing advice and support. His ability to just help you pick yourself up and get on with it was very helpful.

When I finally stood for the first time as a candidate in Bamford, he was so happy and proud. He hand wrote 900 envelopes to voters asking for their support and never stopped believing in me. I remember his advice that night, “lad you need to loose sometimes to come back stronger”
In the eight years I knew him as a friend I never really got to say thank you to him, I visited him a few weeks ago in the nursing home where you knew he was fading away – it was very sad and traumatic for me to see him. Now as we say good bye to him, I know I cant pick that phone up and hear his reassured voice and get that support and help.

So Cyril, my dear friend thank you for the friendship, help, support and company, your memory will live on for years to come.

9/11 Burn a Quran day in United States

I strongly condemn Pastor Jones for his stunt to burn the Holy Quran on September 11th, this vile action is designed to cause distress towards Muslims and many people of all faiths and I urge him to reconsider. The burning of any religious scriptures is unacceptable and must be stopped. I welcome the strong comments of President Obama and his Government but we urge urgent action now to stop this stunt.

With freedom of choice comes responsibility and I call on the US Government to take urgent action to stop this racist bigot.

The coming of faith leaders across the United States is comforting to the Muslim communities and an indication that that the burning of the Quran is an attack on all decent tolerant people. This so called man of faith is going against the teachings of the faith of Christianity and there is no link between the Quran and terrorism.

September 11th is a day to remember the victims and not carry out stunts that will lead to community division, in this I hope he fails. The ever increasing attacks on Islam and Muslims is worrying for our communities and we would urge people to reflect on the acceptance of suck attacks as justified.

I urge a peaceful, tolerant response to his actions, our message is of non violence and I hope people understand this.”

Data Darbar Lahore Terrorist attack

I am deeply saddened by the terrorist attacks on Data Darbar in Lahore Pakistan, this senseless and evil attack is a reminder of the daily chaos that exists in Pakistan today. There are 18 confirmed dead and many injured, tonight I offer the victims and their families my deepest sympathies, prayers and condolences.

Once again I reiterate that Islam totally forbids the killing of innocent people and I abhor these attacks, there can be no safe hiding place for these terrorists and they should be brought to justice.

For too long the Government of Pakistan has failed to provide security for its citizens, surely after so many deaths from terrorism the Government will finally act.

Israel kills aid activists in Gaza Flotilla attack

I strongly condemn the Israeli Government for the killing of innocent aid activists in the Gaza Flotilla attack, these ships were operating in international water and on a journey to supply desperately needed aid and medicine for the Gazan people who have suffered from an economic blockade for many years. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families as they come to terms with their loss.

I call on the International community to come together to demand that Israel is held responsible for murdering innocent people and appropriate action from taken by the United Nations for this breach of international law. If Israel claims to be a western democracy but acts like a dictatorship then these murders are the actions of a deplorable Government that clearly has no respect for human life.

I call on the UK Government to do what it can to identify any British citizens on the Ship and take necessary actions to bring them home safely, there should be an international inquiry supported with tough sanctions for Israel to understand it cannot kill innocent people and get away with it.

I call on just people around the world to stand up and demonstrate their abhorrence for these murderous acts. Finally its time for the siege and blockade for Gaza to be lifted.

Child kidnapped in Pakistan

I am deeply saddened and concerned at the kidnapping of British child Sahil Saeed in Jhelum Pakistan yesterday, all our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this distressing time.

The family from Oldham were on holiday and about to return when these cowards carried out this kidnapping, we pray that baby Sahil is safe and is returned to the family, we are ready to offer whatever assistance is needed during these difficult days.

I welcome the immediate attention of the British Government and commend Foreign Minister Chris Bryant for his personal interest in the case and urge British Police to be sent to help find Sahil, the Pakistani Authorities must put all their resources in finding him safely.

The Government’s amendment tonight to the Children, Schools and Families bill about teaching sex education is a welcome u turn from forcing faith schools to abandon their basic articles of faith and principles. I have been very clear from an early stage that enforcing something that is contrary to religious community’s faith is illiberal and unacceptable in the 21st century.

Faith schools should be able to teach children about sex according to their faiths and not dictated to by secularists.

Whilst recognising this is indeed progress we still believe that the Government has to stop bashing faith groups and their schools, these faith schools add great value to many communities in this country, the Government must recognise and accept this.

Faith schools should be free to teach children according to their faiths, the high standards in these schools speak for themselves.”

We should not give in to the secularists who want to marginalise faith from our public life.

Israeli involvement in Dubai murder

“It is concerning that British passports have been used in the assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai allegedly by Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. If these allegations are proven this will be a major breach of international law and the sovereignty of both Dubai and the United Kingdom. I urge the British Foreign Secretary David Milliband to begin a full inquiry into the circumstances of these allegations and for tough action to be taken against those that have cloned and misused British passports.

Whatever our views on the Israeli and Palestinian conflict we can surely come together to urge all sides to respect international law and the sovereignty of both the UK and Dubai.

I strongly condemns the air strikes on Gaza by Israeli war planes, as there can be no justification for terrorism equally there can be no justification for this collective punishment of innocent children, women and people of Gaza.

These attacks are war crimes according to international law and its time for the international community to take action. Their continued support and permission for Israel just leads to more resentment and realisation that there is one law for the West and another for Muslims.

I am saddened that once again the British Government has justified the attacks and more or less given Israel permission to carry on, clearly now is the time for the UK to stand for the sanctity of human life. Biased one sided statements will alienate British Muslims further and do nothing to encourage confidence in this country.

It is now clear that the Israeli attacks are war crimes and its time for the unmoral and Nazi like regime in Israel to be held responsible. How can they justify killing hundreds of innocent people in this disgusting way.

I stand with the Palestinian people in Gaza during these difficult and dark days, their struggle against these war crimes will not end until their lives are as sacred as Western lives.

Councillor Neil Trafford is killed!!!

I have just returned from abroad and heard the dreadful news that Councillor Neil Trafford, City Councillor for Didsbury Ward in manchester City Council has died, I am deeply shocked and sad at this tragic news, it had such a promising future ahead of him.
I remember at the Conference in Bournemouth this year, being the soul of the Party, he was highly talented, liked, experienced and hard working campaigner and will be missed.

He will be missed by many in the North West, our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues, such a tragic loss.

I call on the Government to identify from the leaked BNP Public Sectors workers including Police officers, Teachers and Army staff to ensure that they are dismissed from their jobs.

Continued membership of a fascist and racist party is not compatible with the values and ethos of public service. Further more these people will not be able to meet the requirement under the Race Relations Amendment Act to promote good relations between different communities and provide a fair and equal service to minority communities.

Muslims have woken up!!!

Gordon Brown has delivered a speech in New York yesterday about interfaith and intolerance, in it he talks about action to isolate extremist groups and stop young people being attracted to these groups.

Firstly there is a real threat from terrorism and extremism, there is no getting away from this. There are some so called Muslims who are getting distorted opinions to justify this evil act. Muslims around the world have seen from scholars from all parts of Islam have seen total condemnation of terrorism and extremism, I am clear that there is no difference amongst mainstream Muslim scholars on this issue. We have seen a sea change in the Muslim community to this threat, no longer are people ignoring this threat and the community is focused on reclaiming the agenda and ensuring that those that promote violence and hatred are not welcome in our community.

I think we have started that debate to convince them that there path is wrong and violence in never justified.

After 17 months of unimaginable cruelty, Baby P finally succumbed

I am horrified that the trial of a mother, her boyfriend and her lodger who spent months abusing a small baby has ended without those in social services, police and NHS staff that failed to protect the child that cant be named for legal reasons when they met the child more than 60 times. For the Haringey Council Director of Child Protection to launch an inquiry into her own department is like asking a murderer to investigate their own crime.

The most sad thing is a small innocent baby that was in the care of these sick people is abused, thrown around a room as if they were a doll, spat at, ribs and bowns broken and just left to fester on their own is beyong comprehension and is so evil I cannot begin to describe how I fell reading and watching about this case.

It's times like this I wish the death penalty was brought back for these scum. I am disaapointed that it became a political issue at PMQ in the House of Commons - watching David Cameron and Gordon Brown go at each other like cats was deeply worrying and off putting - to be fair to David Cameron he asked genuine questions because I suspect he was moved by the cruelty and failures of social services to protect him, Gordon Brown was wrong to turn this into a political football - the poor child lost their life and was subjected the most evil abuse and that is what we should all focus on ensuring never happens again.

I am still finding it hard to believe that Barack Obama is President Elect, the events of last Tuesday still bring a smile to my face and I know the world knows that Change has come. However let me be clear the road ahead will be difficult and sometimes I will disagree with the Obama's presidency and when that happens I will speak out - you can be certain of that!!!

Life in Rochdale is okay, we are currently campaigning against plans by the local Council to give developers green space in Rochdale's oldest Park called Springfield Park to build a driving range, this decision is immoral and does nothing to promote healthy living for working class people who struggle to pay for golf classes and deserve free open green space for citizens and their families.

I am taking a lot of political hits from people within Rochdale, politicians, media and others for campaigning to save this park - in years to come future generations will judge us on what we do to preserve our green spaces and I hope our Council thinkls again

Obama is president elect of the USA!!!!

After an emotional and tearful night watching the results coming in from the US it was declared that Senator Barack Obama was elected President in a landslide, my eyes filled up with tears when the result came through because I remember the suffering of Black people (Imean this in the political sense), the slavery, oppresion and racism over the past 100 years.

Many lost their lives for freedom from oppresion and racism and today the United States have elected a Black Man as president, today all Ethnic minorities can dream to be leaders of their countries.

I met Senator Obama in 2006 before he began his campaign in Michigan, he was charsmatic, honest and had this ability to relate to different people, I knew then that he would make a great President.

Having said all this we need to see dramatic change to foreign policy in the US, an end to occupation in Iraq, a less aggressive foreign policy and where the integrity of independent nations is respected, where international law and institutions are respected and also where Guantanamo Bay is closed and torture is outlawed.

President Elect Obama has a great unique opportunity to make a real different to the world and I hope that really does change Washington, he has my best wishes, prayers and support over the coming days and months ahead.

Following the publication today in the US and soon in the UK of the Jewel of Medina the author Sherry Jones has contacted me and the Ramadhan Foundation setting out her views on this issue and the problems we face in relation to publication. I am the Foundation has always been open to debate and dialogue and by this engagement I am keen to ensure that despite strong differences we should always choose dialogue and peaceful engagement.

I still oppose the publication of this novel and urge all people of faith around the world to come together and stop our faiths being denigrated in this disgusting way.

I can confirm that this week that the author of the Jewel of Medina Sherry Jones has contacted the Ramadhan Foundation about our campaign against her novel and has made representations, I welcome this dialogue with her as an opportunity to ensure that we continue to discuss why we strongly oppose her novel and let her know the hurt she is causing Muslims.

I strongly condemns Jewel of Medina novel as an attempt to belittle, spear one of the greatest woman in Islam Aisha (RA). I believe that these types of novels or books do nothing to promote understanding between faiths and respecting the symbols and figures of faiths, I am not against freedom of speech but believe that freedom comes with huge responsibility.

I further strongly condemn the violence and terrorism that has been used this weekend against the Gibson Square Publishing House, whilst I passionately oppose their plans to print the novel, trying to use violence is against Islam and I urge all Muslims to remain peaceful and within the law.

I am disgusted at the novel and the plans by Gibson House to publish, this serves no purpose and does little to promote understanding between communities – indeed attacking the central figures of Islam under the guise of freedom of speech is patronising and the world sees their attempt to belittle our faith.

I also strongly condemn the thugs that used terrorism against the publishing house; they do not represent Islam or Muslims and violence in any form cannot be justified and we urge the Publishers to withdraw publication.

I widely welcomes and celebrates the capture of disgraced Serbian war criminal Radovan Karadzic in Belgrade last night. The moment for justice has arrived for millions of Bosnian Muslims and Croats who lost loved ones and saw them driven from their homes and communities.

Whilst celebrating his capture, I also remember with sadness and sorrow the millions of victims of the Bosnian war, this was Europe’s 20th century Holocaust and it was a matter of shame that Europe allowed this massacre to go on under their noses.

I urge the Serbian Government to send him to The Hague immediately so that he can be charged and put on trial for his murderous crimes, I further urge increased work to capture the Serb military leader Ratko Mladic so that victims can see justice done and this distressing chapter of war crimes can be closed.

I commend all those involved in his capture and look forward to his appearance at The Hague.

I widely welcomes the Government’s Equalities Bill published today in the House of Commons. This is a unique moment for equality in this country and the Government is widely applauded for its initiative to bring all equalities legislation into one act that is enforced, readable and effective.

I have to say ultimate praise goes to the Equalities Minister Harriet Harman MP, without her determination and commitment we would not be able to get to today and when history comes to judge 2008 her name will forever be remembered for equality and the historic steps she has take today. I urge the Government to introduce the Bill in the next Queens Speech and ensure that it completes its passage before summer 2009.

I urge all political parties to support the Bill and ensure that any attempt to delay passage will be met with resistance from the country at large. I condemn the right wing media for the headlines in today’s papers, these headlines are based on lies, they should be ashamed.

I am pleased that the Government have taken this initiative in the Equalities field, we pay tribute to the Government and in particular the Equalities Minister Harriet Harman MP, without her leadership and commitment we would not be able to get to this stage.

I urge the Government to introduce the Bill in the next session and let’s make history together.

David Davis stands for his principles, commended and saluted

I commends David Davis MP on his courageous and principled proposal to resign as the Conservative Shadow Home Secretary and a MP for his local constituency. For too long politicians have been accused of putting their own interests before their principles – today Mr. Davis has done what is right and I salute his courage and commitment to defending civil liberties in this country.

The Government failed to provide any evidence to suggest the needs for an increase of pre charge detention, the Labour MPs that changed their votes and voted for Gordon Brown should hang their head in shame. Rights that have taken hundreds of years to be enshrined in British law should not be given up on the basis of shoring up a failed premiership of a lame duck Prime Minister.

David Davis’s principled defence of Civil Liberties and the rule of law is an inspiration for the nation, we look forward to a debate based on the issues and evidence and not jumped up proposals for political benefits. The Government should not play politics with people’s lives.

Radical Islam taking advantage of Christianity's decline, says bishop

Radical Islam is threatening to fill a “moral vacuum” in Britain as a result of a decline of Christian values, a senior Church of England bishop has said.

The Bishop of Rochester, the Right Rev Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, claims that the Church dissolved its influence over the country’s morals during the social and sexual revolution of the 1960s. He said that the waning influence of Christianity had created a lack of principles that was allowing radical Islam to push its “comprehensive” claims.

Mohammed Shafiq, of the Muslim youth organisation the Ramadhan Foundation, criticised the Bishop, saying that there was no evidence that the vacuum left by Christianity was being filled by extremists; it was being filled by secularists and an obsession with celebrity, fame and money, he said.

Dr Nazir-Ali said in his article for the political magazine Standpoint that Christianity had brought together a “rabble of mutually hostile tribes, fiefdoms and kingdoms” into a nation conscious of its identity and able to make an impact on the world.

He quoted an academic who blamed the 1960s cultural revolution for bringing Christianity’s role in society to an abrupt end. It was said that, instead of resisting the social and sexual revolution, church leaders had capitulated. The Bishop said: “It is a situation which has created the moral and spiritual vacuum in which we find ourselves. Whilst the Christian consensus was dissolved, nothing else, except perhaps endless self-indulgence, was put in its place.”

Marxism had been shown to be a “nonsense”, he added. “We are now, however, confronted by another equally serious ideology, that of radical Islamism, which also claims to be comprehensive in scope. It remains the case, however, that many of the beliefs and values which we need to deal with the present situation are rooted in the Judaeo-Christian tradition.”

Earlier this year the Bishop argued in a Sunday newspaper that Islamic extremists were creating “no-go areas” for non-Muslims in Britain, over which he received death threats. Last weekend he was quoted as claiming that the Church was not doing enough to convert Muslims to Christianity.

In his Standpoint article he said: “The question is not ‘should faith have a role in public life?’ — but what kind of role? Every temptation to theocracy, on every side, must be renounced. There is no place for coercion where the relationship of religion to the State is concerned.”Government would have to be more open to religious concerns and to make room for religious conscience, the Bishop said.

“The integrity and autonomy of public authority and of the law will also have to be recognised and it would be best if religious law in its application was left to the communities. Public law should, however, continue to provide overarching protection for all.”

Mr Shafiq countered the Bishop’s argument on extremism, saying: “Another day and another attack on Islam and Muslims by Mr Nazir-Ali.

“Everything this man says is based on fiction and promoting intolerance and fear among communities.
“Islam is on the rise because people recognise and are inspired by the trueness of our faith, whilst recognising that we live in a majority Christian country. We all have a duty to work together to build cohesive communities and not establish division,” Mr Shafiq added.

Fusion Awards announces finalists - I'm nominated for man of the year!!!

UNSUNG heroes who have contributed to their communities in the north west will be recognised at the Fusion Awards 2008 this weekend.

The finalist have been announced for the sold-out event which will take place this Saturday at the Premier Suite, Ewood Park, Blackburn.

As well as the awards ceremony, entertainment will also be provided. This will include a catwalk show featuring some of the north’s top designers and performances from top comedienne Shazia Mirza and Bollywood dance group Imagine Asian.

Community group of the year

Youth in Action (Preston), a voluntary group set up by and for young people. Helping younger people to focus on studying and personal development, Youth in Action has 10 young board members and works with over 100 young people in the inner-city Frenchwood and Avenham areas of Preston.

Building Bridges Pendle (Nelson), producing Community Cohesion Education Programmes for local primary and secondary schools as well as inter-faith seminars, peace vigils, community forums and joint projects between places of worship from different faiths.

Behna Group (Great Harwood), helping advance women’s education through informal training for women aged 20 to 60 in a friendly environment, with all board members using their free time and relying on very little funding

Brookhouse Community Action Team (Blackburn), raising awareness of vital health issues among young people, including designing the first-ever testicular cancer toolkit which will be distributed through Macmillan Cancer Research

Our Independence (Altrincham), a group helping disabled people make new friends, set up by Renu Duggal after she suffered a stroke and lost the use of one side of her body. The group meets weekly and all activities are offered free of charge.

Community Cohesion Award

Omar Khan (Preston), Omar's group works closely with disaffected young people in the Fishwick, Callon and Deepdale wards of Preston, with an emphasis on diversionary activities to keep youth away from gang culture and gun crime. Omar often works in his own free time, and has used his own money when funding has dried up.

Bolton Interfaith Council, whose activities include the discussion and resolution of issues, an ongoing events programme and other awareness-raising activities working towards raising trust and understanding between the faith communities in Bolton.

Father Phillip Sumner (Oldham). Admired by so many people from all backgrounds, responsible for very successful grass roots inter-faith initiatives in the Oldham area after spending 25 years in the Moss Side area of Manchester where he set up the ‘Young, Gifted and Equal’ programme advocating respect for young people’s ethnic and religious identities.

One Extreme to the Other (Oldham), a ground-breaking play by Mike Harris, performed to over 2,500 pupils in Greater Manchester. Developed by Mossley-based GW Theatre Company in partnership with Oldham Council, the play features a Muslim extremist as well as a white extremist group and is now being commissioned for performances across the UK.

Trish Ferrarin and Judy Smith (Blackburn), chair and secretary of the Revidge Community Association to tackle neighbourhood issues including crime, traffic hot spots and litter and to promote inter-community understanding.

Rukshanda Ibrahim (Bolton), personalisemydummy.com. A mother of four, Rukshanda knew at first-hand that children lose dummies constantly, and came up with a unique product – personalized dummies.

Shabnam Naz Khan (Nelson), Maria’s Cash & Carry and Maria’s Farms. Shabnam was the first Asian woman in the North West to run her own cash-and-carry, deciding that business was her true vocation although she’d studied law. Investing in a farm on the outskirts of Colne and employing local people there, Shabnam recently bought a second farm, and is now rearing 400 cattle in total and looking into halal dairy produce.

Public service award

Hena Begum, East Lancashire Children’s Home. Already having been the first Bangladeshi to join Lancashire Constabulary, Hena switched to working as a residential social worker in Lancashire, where she now champions equality and diversity.

Humayun Shouib, National Probation Service. Lancashire-based Humayun has worked for the Service for 16 years, in which time he has negotiated prayer facilities and halal food provision as well as delivering diversity training and establishing a Black and Asian Staff Networking Group.
Sadiq Patel, Blackburn with Darwen Council for Voluntary Service. Sadiq has been providing a critical link for inter-faith dialogue, with both the CVS and with Blackburn Rovers Football Club.
Sheela Solanki, Preston Women’s Refuge. Sheela, a Youth Offending Team Officer working in Blackpool, is volunteer chair of the management committee at Preston Women’s Refuge, a drop-in centre with a 24-hour staffed helpline.

Prabha Halai (Bolton), organizer of the Bend It Like Beckham Project in Bolton which promotes women’s football – and its teamwork and health benefits - among women of all ages and abilities in the local South Asian communities. Prabha’s team have gone from strength to strength and now play in local leagues.

Ferrari Faqiri, winner of 23 karate and tae kwon do medals in the last 12 months. Ferrari already holds two world championships in karate and one in tae kwon do, and aims to be an Olympic champion in London in 2012. Ferrari, who was born 10 weeks prematurely and is an asthma sufferer, also trains young people from the local area at his father’s gym.

Ibrahim Shah (Blackburn), 12-year-old winner of the North West Golden Gloves finals in Manchester earlier this year. The Audley Boxing Club member, Blackburn’s first ever Golden Gloves finalist, was chosen to represent England and he fought in the Three Nations Tournament in Sheffield, clinching gold in his England debut.

Maira Malik (Liverpool), nine-year-old karate black belt and ‘success coach’ to other youngsters. This year Maira was named Under-10s Sports Personality of the Year at the British Asian Sports Awards.

Man of the year

Canon Chris Chivers (Blackburn Cathedral), who has been at the forefront of inter-faith dialogue and initiatives in the area, especially projects helping build bridges between Muslims and Christians.

Muhammed Matadar, a Blackburn-based Premiership official who began as a referee in local community leagues 12 years ago and has now refereed for the Champions League and the UEFA Cup amongst others. Muhammed continues to assist local leagues, including organizing charity tournaments, despite his busy schedule.

Muhammed Shafiq, Rochdale-based head of the Ramadhan Foundation, who has been vocal in helping debunk media misconceptions around Islam and who has spoken widely on issues affecting first-generation British Muslims.

Woman of the year

Feeraz Begum, Brierfield-based founder of Caring Today, a support group for parents of children with disabilities. Herself the mother of a child with multiple disabilities, Feeraz set out to challenge some of the notions about disabilities within the South Asian communities. Caring

Today now has seven full-time staff and 16 sessional workers.

Mussurut Zia, a Blackburn woman who has spent the last 10 years working for community cohesion in her role with Lancashire Constabulary, tirelessly campaigning for women’s rights and against domestic violence, forced marriage and honour killings. Mussurut has written training materials on these subjects for the police, the CPS and voluntary sector organizations.

Fatima Patel, Tay Jiva and Monica Bhagchandani, three Bolton women who set up Ethical Entertainment, an organization involved in community celebrations. The group has strong connections with the Fortalice women’s refuge, for whom they have helped forge meaningful links with women in the South Asian communities.

Malaysia's ex-PM Mahathir wants Iraq war leaders on war crimes charges

LONDON (AFP) — Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has called for an international tribunal to try Western leaders with war crimes over the war in Iraq, a spokesman for the organisers said.

In a speech at Imperial College, London, Mahathir called for a tribunal to try US President George W. Bush plus former prime ministers Tony Blair of Britain and John Howard of Australia for their part in the conflict, said a spokesman for the Muslim group the Ramadhan Foundation, which set up the event.

Spokesman Mohammed Shafiq told AFP that Mahathir, who was in office from 1981 to 2003, wants to see the trio tried "in absence for war crimes committed in Iraq.

"It was a opportunity for students to put a range of questions about war crimes and the international situation.

"He said that people have to stop killing each other and use arbitration, negotiation and discussion as an alternative to violence, war and killing."

On the war in Iraq, Mahathir spoke about "the thousands dying, the economic war, the power of oil and how we could utilise some of these tools to have a leverage against the people who commit countries to war," Shafiq said.

He purposely did not speak about or answer questions from students on the political situation in Malaysia, said Shafiq.

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is facing growing demands to quit, following an unprecedented electoral setback in March.

More than 450 people attended the speech and about 200 more had to be turned away.
Mahathir was in Cuba earlier this week to take part in the first International Conference of the Cuban Centre for Studies on Defence Information.

Muslim leader accuses police of being 'over cautious' in stopping Asian gangs pimping white girls

A muslim leader has accused the police of failing to tackle Asian gangs suspected of prostituting young white girls.

Officers are accused of being "over cautious" when investigating Muslim criminals because they fear being branded racist.

Last night Mohammed Shafiq, director of the Ramadhan Foundation, said the police were differentiating between criminals on the basis of race.

He claimed, driven by fear of race riots in places like Blackburn and Oldham, officers were "overtly sensitive" and not clamping down on the sordid practice.

His controversial comments in this week's Panorama reignite a massively controversial issue which exploded over a Channel 4 documentary in 2004.

That programme which claimed Asian men in Bradford were grooming under age white girls for prostitution was pulled from C4's schedules.

This was because police claimed at the time that it could provoke racial violence during the local election campaign.

Now the BBC is to risk the wrath of police officials and campaigners by airing a programme which will look at the same issue.

Speaking as part of the Panorama investigation, which airs tomorrow (Thursday), Shafiq said: "I think the police are overcautious on dealing with this issue openly because they fear being branded racist and I think that is wrong."

"These are criminals they should be treated as criminals. They are not Asian criminals, they are not Muslim criminals, they are not white criminals. They are criminals and they should be treated as criminals."

He said that some of the criminals were Asian gangs looking to supplement their income, after the cost of drugs has fallen over the last few years.

Shafiq said "I am the only Muslim leader in the UK that speaks up against this sort of thing and I do it because these teenage girls are somebody's sisters and they are somebody's daughters. I have got two daughters and I wouldn't want that to happen to my daughters.

"If there is a drug dealer grooming a white teenager into prostitution then I don't want the police service or local authority not to be open about it."

Philip Davies, MP for Shipley, also raised concerns about the issue yesterday.

He said: "Everybody is affected by political correctness. The reason why it is so important is because things like this.

"Young girls are having their lives threatened and ruined because people pussyfoot around and they are too scared to do anything in case they make a mistake and are accused of racism.

"That's why we have to tackle the culture of political correctness everybody is affected by and I think the police are probably more affected and hamstrung by it than most organisations."

His comments come as Professor David Barrett of University of Bedfordshire also raised deep concerns about the issue in the BBC1 programme.

He claimed evidence suggested that those operating the practice were "absolutely" likely to get away with it.

The programme will controversially reveal the ethnic pattern of the crime which is largely Asian in northern England, Afro-Caribbean in the West Midlands and elsewhere white, Turkish and Kurdish.

The Government, reacting to concerns, has revealed it will introduce new crime-fighting targets aimed at specifically combating the little-publicised problem.

But there are concerns that the practice, mostly operated by drug dealing gangs, has been of little priority to the various authorities.

Figures suggest there are in the region of 5,000 British children being used as prostitutes.
On the programme Vernon Coaker under secretary of state with responsibility for policing reveals the new measures will be come into force next month.

The government also plans to introduce a new warning video for use in schools over the issue.
But despite funding a Home Office study almost ten years ago which revealed how the problem can be tackled, the police has a low prosecution rate.

Coaker told Panorama that using powers under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 there have been just 44 convictions for grooming and pimping young children.

Police attempts are said to be frustrated by a code of silence.

I expresses my total disgust and anger at the brutal murder of Catholic Archbishop of Mosul Paulos Faraj Rahho, this senseless murder goes against humanity and we express our deep sorrow to the Catholic Church and community around the world.

Islam urges us to stand with those that are oppressed around the world, whatever their nationality or faith, the killing of religious leaders that work to promote peace and understanding in Iraq goes against the very basic principles of Islam.

I urge the United Nations to order an independent investigation into the circumstances of Archbishop’s kidnap and subsequent killing and we urge the Iraqi Government to bring the culprits to justice. There should be no hiding place for these evil people anywhere in the world.

I expresses its total disgust, anger and condemnation at the senseless murder of Archbishop Rahho in Mosul, Iraq. The killing of religious leaders in unacceptable and we offer our condolences to Archbishop’s family and the Catholic Church.

Death of Chief Constable Michael Todd

I am deeply saddened by the death of Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Michael Todd. He had a distinguished record of policing throughout his career and he will be missed by colleagues, friends and those that met him on various occasions.

Israel and war crimes in Gaza

I totally condemns the Israeli aggression and oppression being carried out in Gaza, with over 70 people dead, many children and innocent people there is a quiet silence from the international community which is deeply flawed and worrying.

There can be no justification for the continue oppression and discriminate killing that is carried out and I urge the international community to speak against this evil and ensure that the voices of innocent Palestinians are not silenced.

Israel has engaged in war crimes, what purpose is served by killing women and children? The Israeli’s must recognise that there continued occupation of Palestinian land is the sole reason why there is instability in the region.

I am horrified and saddened by the deaths of many innocent people including women and children in Gaza, it is once again clear that Israel is engaged in committing war crimes and we strongly condemn these actions – we send our deepest condolences and prayers to those that are suffering in Gaza.

I further urges the international community not to remain silent and condemn these crimes and urge the Israelis to stop their occupation and continued oppression of the Palestinian people.

We must all stand up against this evil, whatever our faith or background.”

Mohammed Shafiq accused the Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, of spreading hatred towards Muslims

Writing in the Daily Express, Forsyth laid into Mr Shafiq, spokesman for the Rochdale-based Ramadhan Foundation, over his comments.

Forsyth called for his resignation for saying that fundamentalism had made some Islamic communities hostile to Christians and those from other faiths.

But Day of the Jackal author Forsyth said the Foundation and fellow Muslim organisation, the Islamic Society of Great Britain, were over-reacting and accused them of distorting the truth.

He wrote in the Express: "The Ramadhan Foundation claimed again that anyone criticising even the most extreme proponents of the poison that beyond any doubt exists inside the Muslim ‘umma’ in our country is criticising all Muslims.

"This is simply not true and one suspects these ‘spokesmen’ secretly know it.

"The Bishop made absolutely plain that he was referring to extremists and to suggest that no such maniacs exist is ludicrous."

He added: "To claim to speak for British Islam, but only to rage at a Christian bishop who preaches against the evil of hatred – and hatred is evil in all beliefs – is not the answer."

But Mr Shafiq has hit back at the criticism, claiming the column was an attempt to demonise his organisation.

He said: "There is clear intent to demonise and attack a Muslim organisation, which works to build understanding between different communities.

"There is clearly an attempt to attack me in particular and damage my reputation. These comments belittle the work we do."

I welcomes the comments and support from the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams for the introduction of Sharia law in the United Kingdom for civil matters. These comments from Archbishop Williams are testament to his attempts to understand Islam and promote tolerance and respect between our great faiths.

The introduction of Sharia Law for civil matters in the UK will allow British Muslims to seek religious ruling for matters that UK courts do not pass judgement on, Sharia law is widely misunderstood and this intervention from Archbishop Williams will reinstate the debate based on facts not right wing headlines.

I do however express concern that Archbishop Williams did not speak publically against the comments made by Mr. Nazir Ali about no go areas, it is now clear that his article was false and in fact there are no go areas for Christians in the UK. Without the strong condemnation from Archbishop Williams when certain figures try to promote intolerance Muslims will take the silence as authority and support for such comments.

Banning of Shaykh Yusuf Al Qardawi

I want to expresses my total condemnation and concern at the banning of Shaykh Yusuf Al Qardawi from visiting the UK for medical treatment. The Government have pandered to the right wing xenophobes who wish to isolate and demonise Islam and Muslims.

Shaykh Al Qardawi is a voice of moderation and is widely respected across the international community, he has spoken out against terrorism and totally condemns 9/11, 7/7 and other terrorist attacks. I am concerned that this will fuel the anger Muslims have towards the Government and Politicians like David Cameron who jumps on bandwagons to demonise Islam and Muslims.

There are many people in the BNP and the far right that project violence and hatred towards minorities yet this Government does not take any action, this banning smacks of double standards, one rule for Muslims and one for non Muslims.

I urge the government to rethink this decision and allow him to come to the UK for medical treatment.

I am clear that the Government is pandering to prejudices when it made this decision.”

I am clear that the role of the Mosque has substantially changed over the past decade. With more 2nd generation youngsters wanting to hear and learn Islam in English. We have consistently believed that the Mosques must wake up this challenge, understanding and speaking English is now an essential part of the Imam role. This also means that Young people should make every effort to understand their mother tongue and work hard to build a wider understanding of both cultures and languages.

This sort of politics breeds division and allows those on the far right to take advantage, the central principal is that the running of the Mosques are an internal matter for the Muslim community, how would readers feel if Muslims were dictating to Christians or Jews how to run their pray sessions or Churches and Synagogues.

Politicians of all parties have a duty to ensure that they do not jump on every bandwagon that passes through, the challenges for the Mosques are very clear and I do believe we are seeing change happening on the ground.

The legacy of this Government is one of the Iraq War, long term detention, discriminating anti terror laws and losing of personal data, it is interesting that Mr. Danczuk is not willing to talk about the wider important issues facing our country.

Islamic extremism creating 'no-go' areas for non-Muslims in Britain, says Bishop of Rochester

He warned against the acceptance in this country of Sharia laws based on the Koran and added that amplified calls to prayer from mosques are imposing an Islamic character on surrounding areas.

And he complained of the "multi-faith mish-mash" promoted by the Government and blamed it for undermining the influence of Christianity.

The bishop's attack on aggressive Islamic leaders brought condemnation from prominent Muslim groups. One called for the Church of England to take "serious action" against him.

But Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said the bishop had exposed "a deeply serious problem".

He added that Government confusion "risks encouraging radicalism and creating home-grown terrorism".

Dr Nazir-Ali, who grew up in Pakistan where he suffered harassment for his own Christian faith, warned of no-go areas in an article in the Sunday Telegraph.
He spoke of "a worldwide resurgence of the ideology of Islamic extremism" and added:

"One of the results of this has been to further alienate the young from the nation in which they were growing up and also to turn already separate communities into 'no-go' areas where adherence to this ideology has become a mark of acceptability."

The bishop added: "Those of a different faith or race may find it difficult to live or work there because of hostility to them. In many ways, this is the other side of the coin of far-Right intimidation."

Dr Nazir-Ali said that using amplification for the call to prayer from mosques was an attempt to impose Islam on an area.

This, he said, raised the question of "whether non-Muslims wish to be told the creed of a particular faith five times a day on the loudspeaker.

"This is happening here even though some Muslim-majority communities are trying to reduce noise levels from multiple mosques announcing this call, one after the other, over quite a small geographical area."

The bishop said that the influence-of Christianity was in decline because "the authorities want multi-faith provision", which meant chapels and chaplains in hospitals, prisons and universities were now under threat.

Secularism and the "multi-faith mish-mash" were pushing out Christianity and Government attempts to encourage integration "lack the underpinning of a moral and spiritual vision".

The charges brought an angry response from the Muslim Council of Britain, the Islamic umbrella group which has come back into favour with the Government since Gordon Brown became Prime Minister.

Assistant Secretary-General Inayat Bunglawala said the Government had contributed to the rise of Islamic extremism and compared the Islamic call to prayer with church bells.

'He talks about the rise of "Islamic extremism" but fails to mention how some of the policies of our government and especially that of the United States in the Middle East over several decades now has clearly contributed to this phenomenon.

"He complains of the Islamic call to prayer but presumably is content for all of us to listen to the ringing of church bells. As Jesus himself advised, perhaps the good bishop may want to examine the beam in his own eye before pointing fingers at others."

Mohammed Shafiq, of the Muslim youth group the Ramadhan Foundation, accused Dr Nazir-Ali of attempting to "whip up hatred" against Muslims. The article would "remind people of the road to Nazism", he said.

A spokesman for the Communities and Local Government Department said: "The overwhelming majority of Muslims are peaceful, make a huge contribution to British life and find the views of a small minority of violent extremists completely abhorrent.

"Britain also has a proud tradition of different communities living together side by side."

A Muslim campaigner praised the government for plans to bring in faith schools into state funding.

Mohammed Shafiq from the Ramadhan Foundation in Rochdale told the Secretary of State for Children, Ed Balls, the plans, which will effect more than 120 Islamic schools in the UK, will be welcomed by the Muslim community.

Mr Shafiq went to meet ministers in London to talk about issues facing the Muslim community.
He said: "When the government is doing something right then they should be told that.

"In this case plans to introduce faith schools into state funding brackets is great news.

"Right now for many parents sending their children to a faith school is jot an option due to the fees.
"Many families have more than one children and to send them all to faith school will leave them out of pocket."

He also thanked ministers on vanishing the use of the words 'Muslim extremists' and 'Islamic terrorism.'

He said: "These words were pandering towards islamaphobia and were demonising towards Muslims and ministers told me that the government has stopped using these terms.

"I have not heard them use them in many weeks and this was something that we had been calling for."

A SPOKESMAN for the Ramadhan Foundation has slammed plans to axe Rochdale Infirmary’s accident and emergency, maternity and children’s departments claiming it will be a potential disaster for the Muslim community.

Mohammed Shafiq accused the government of not taking into account the diverse cultural needs of the town.

He said: "We are obviously deeply distressed by this decision. This will have a massive impact on the people of Rochdale.

"Our religion states that Muslim women must give birth away from the gaze of other people. Oldham and Bury hospitals are a four or five-mile car ride away.

"If a Muslim woman was to give birth in the car on the way to the other hospitals it would be disastrous."

The new plans followed a review of the Making It Better and Healthy Futures proposals carried out by a body of experts, the Independent Reconfiguration Panel.

They recommended the plans to re-organise health services across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and the High Peak, first put forward in summer 2005, be approved.

It means that Rochdale’s accident and emergency unit will be turned into an urgent care centre, with seriously injured patients being transported to the Royal Oldham, Fairfield or North Manchester General hospitals instead.

Under the proposals the Infirmary’s A and E could close within the next two years, depending on staffing.

Maternity services will be axed with eight centres of excellence being set up, the nearest being at Oldham and Manchester.

Mr Shafiq added: "We must pay tribute, however, to the hard work of all those involved in the campaign to save our hospital and we must all remember this decision when it comes to the next general election. It’s the only way now we can be heard."

'Mosques Failing To Address Key Issues'

There is a battle going on within Britain's Muslim community between extremists and traditionalists.

Mohammed Shafiq from the Ramadhan Foundation has written a piece for Sky News about the struggles faced in teaching the younger generation:

The Ramadhan Foundation is very clear that when discussing the role of the mosque - we should always pay tribute to the elder community.

When they arrived in the early 1960's there was no mosques or Imams and it was their hard work and sacrifices that enabled future generations to practice our faith in mosques up and down the country.

Having paid this tribute to the elder community we have to understand that the mosques in the UK are failing to address the key concerns of Young Muslims.

Enter any mosque on a Friday and you will surely see young Muslims sitting at the back talking about a host of other things whilst the Imam is preaching.

When I recently questioned some youngsters in my local mosque in Rochdale, I was told that the Imam didn't understand English and they had problems understanding Urdu.

The day after 7/7, I prayed at a mosque in Newcastle. The Imam spoke very passionately about the evil of terrorism and how Islam forbids Muslims from carrying out these murderous acts.
I was moved by his sermon but it was delivered totally in Punjabi. I remember looking around the mosque hall and seeing many youngsters engaged in their own conversations.

The Ramadhan Foundation has for many years been calling for mosques to understand that tackling the issues surrounding terrorism, extremism, cohesion, integration, Islamic values, rule of law etc can only be done in English.

The people who run the mosque have systematically failed to deliver Islamic education to young people that would equip them for the challenges of living in multi-cultural Britain, in a society where we respect each other and live peacefully together.

Speaking to many young Muslims they are desperately in need of muslim scholars and Imams that speak their language and understand the issues facing young Muslims in the United Kingdom.

Whether it is on tackling extremism, preventing terrorism or learning the basic principles of the Islamic faith, Imams must be able to communicate their message into English.

The Ramadhan Foundation accepts that young Muslims must do more to understand their mother tongue as this will keep them in touch with their cultural heritage passed from generation to generation.

So what should mosques do?

:: It should ensure that every sermon is delivered in English along with other languages for the elder community.

:: It should tackle and alert people to the evil of terrorism.

:: It should train young Muslims in running the mosques and then give them the control to run the mosques. When young Muslims see this they will be empowered to get involved more.

:: Ensure that the Mosques are open and transparent, with certified accounts and meetings where decisions are taken openly and those in responsibility are held accountable.

:: Develop a structured curriculum that addresses cohesion, integration, tolerance, respect, tackling extremism and terrorism and contemporary issues such as low educational standards, unemployment, poverty etc.

:: Establish lasting links with other faiths, schools and encourage non Muslims to visit the Mosque

:: Hold regular events in English that help youngsters channel their anger in positive ways, like the issues around double standards in UK foreign policy, illegal war in Iraq etc

:: Promote peaceful coexistence between different diverse communities

With an environment where young people can learn Islam we will be able to tackle many of the key issues facing our country, only together can we defeat terrorism.

The Ramadhan Foundation is hopeful that if mosques carry out the above the Muslim community will be in a much better position than today.

New approaches for overhaul of UK security

Recent terror attempts in the UK may make it easier for the new government to introduce controversial anti-terrorism measures, including extending pre-charge detention for terror suspects.

Terror attacks in London and Glasgow this month ensured a baptism of fire for Prime Minister Gordon Brown and served as a reminder that two years after 52 people were killed by explosions on London's public transport system, the UK remains a prime target for terrorism.

Two un-detonated car bombs containing petrol, gas cylinders and nails were found in separate cars in London in the early hours of 29 June. The following day and more than 480 kilometers away, a Jeep filled with gas cylinders and fuel ploughed into the check-in entrance at Glasgow Airport, exploding as it hit.

The new government has been praised for its response to the botched attacks, over which eight suspects have so far been detained, and has resisted any impulse to use this as an opportunity to push through draconian anti-terror laws.

But as the UK breathes a sigh of relief at having narrowly averted bloodshed, speculation has begun that this may make it easier for the new government to introduce controversial measures when the anti-terror bill is announced in the fall.

New Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has already suggested in the wake of the attacks that an extension to pre-charge detention for terror suspects may be on the cards.

"There may well be a case for looking very carefully at the amount of time that we are able to detain people pre-charge in order to ensure the very best opportunity to bring convictions," she told MPs in a Commons' statement on 2 July.

While Brown indicated last month at a Labour Party meeting on 3 June, before his premiership began, that he planned to seek an extension to the time a suspect can be held without charges beyond the current limit of 28 days.

Brown said he was ready to be "tough in the security measures that are necessary to prevent terrorist incidents in this country," while stressing that he would protect civil liberties with judicial oversight and parliamentary accountability.

Other measures that may also be introduced in the upcoming bill are the right to submit intercept evidence - gleaned from intercepting communications as they are transmitted via a postal service, telephone or email - in a criminal trial and to continue questioning suspects after they have been charged.

Deterrent or catalyst?The new government has promised to seek cross-party support and consult Muslim representatives over new legislation in what has been interpreted as a more consensual approach to terrorism.

In the past, proposals to extend pre-charge detention have met with violent opposition, from both politicians and human rights groups.

Tony Blair's government suffered its first Commons defeat in 2005 when MPs voted against proposals to increase pre-charge detention from 14 days to three months, and had to settle for a compromise of 28 days.

But in the days following the recent attacks, Lord Carlile of Berriew QC, the British government's independent reviewer of terror laws, suggested an extension may be necessary to help tackle the ongoing terror threat.

In an interview on the BBC program HardTalk on 5 July, he suggested that four weeks' pre-charge detention may not be long enough in certain terror situations, adding that there may be cases "where computers are so well encoded that it's not possible to break into them within 28 days."

But Jen Corlew of the human rights group Liberty told ISN Security Watch that holding a suspect for longer than 28 days without charge was classified as "internment."

She warns that such a measure could end up being counterproductive, giving the example of the situation in Northern Ireland, where use of internment became - in the words of former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Lord Tom King - the IRA's "greatest recruiting sergeant."

"The lesson that we've [learned] from Northern Ireland is that internment can actually end up helping terrorist recruiters because people feel there's been an injustice," Corlew said.

She supports other proposals being considered to give greater powers to police and prosecutors - with precautions in place - to allow them a chance to gather more evidence so that suspects can be charged and prosecuted, rather than just being held for a long period of time.

Liberty also welcomes Brown's intention to call for a Privy Council review on the use of intercept evidence in court - a measure it has been suggesting for years - but one which the UK's security services are thought to oppose, fearing it will reveal their methods.

Checks and balancesDr Daniel Moeckli, of the School of Law at the University of Nottingham, is unconvinced that the police want or need powers to extend pre-charge detention. He suggests that such a proposal could be interpreted as a political move to make the authorities appear to be tough on terrorism.

"As far as I understand there hasn't been a single case where police would have thought it necessary to detain someone for longer than 28 days," he said.

Like Corlew, Moeckli says it is important to look at lessons learned from counterterrorism measures applied in the past.

"From Northern Ireland, we know that internment had negative consequences, as people became more radicalized in prison and there was actually a rise in violence after internment was introduced," he said.

He agrees that allowing intercept evidence to be submitted in court is a viable alternative to extended pre-charge detention and is something all other European countries except Ireland allow.
But Dr Paul Cornish, head of the International Security Programme at UK-based foreign policy think tank Chatham House says the submission of intercept evidence should be handled carefully.

"If there are good reasons for national security not to reveal this information or evidence in court, and then as a result [of revealing it] we find ourselves in a less secure position, then clearly we've got to do something to fix that," he said.

Cornish is sympathetic to proposals to extend pre-charge detention - provided this is accompanied with proper checks and balances, such as an oversight committee or an annual review.
"When I talk to people in the police [...] the sense I get is not that the 90-day [proposal] is regarded as a repressive measure in any sense. They argue that they simply need enough time," he said.
He says it is understandable that police would like longer than 28 days to gather evidence in terror cases, where they may be investigating hugely complex networks.

But Dr Brian Brivati, professor of contemporary history at Kingston University, says that before rushing to introduce any anti-terror measures, it is important to establish first if they will actually help combat terrorism.

"There's kind of a presumption that greater powers, more intrusive powers will help. Has that been proven? Is it proven that the police are asking for these measures?" he asked.

Brivati told ISN Security Watch that it was not clear whether extended pre-charge detention "will make any difference to our ability to stop terror attacks."

"It looks to me like a form of selective internment is where [the authorities are] heading, he said.
He believes introducing more restrictive measures not only means breaching human rights legislation, but also risks further alienating people who may then become more receptive to recruitment into radical groups.

Mohammed Shafiq of the Ramadhan Foundation is also concerned that proposals to extend pre-charge detention may be revived.

"There has been no evidence available that the current 28 days is insufficient, so I would have some difficulty supporting 90-day detention on the basis that people have a right to due process, legal representation, and to know if they're being charged," he told ISN Security Watch.

Shafiq notes with disappointment that the last government failed to implement most of the recommendations of a taskforce set up to tackle extremism in the aftermath of the 7 July London bombings.

The Brown government has an opportunity to set a new course in tackling terrorism, he said, adding that he would wait for the bill to be formally announced before passing judgment.

"It's early days for this government and the new prime minister. We'll have to wait to assess whether he's been good or not," he said. "We've got to see a better response from the government."

TONY EASTLEY: As British police continue to question five suspects in connection with botched terrorist attacks in Britain, the UK's new Security Minister has warned that the threat against the UK has never been greater. The government has hired former Navy chief, Sir Alan West, who left the force six months ago, to work out how to respond to the new challenges from terrorism. Sir Alan admits that dealing with extremism will be a difficult and drawn out process. Here's Europe Correspondent Jane Hutcheon.

JANE HUTCHEON: Sir Alan West paints a worrying picture of Britain. He said the current threat from terrorism was greater now than six months ago when the former head of the intelligence agency MI5, Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, warned her office was tracking 30 terror plots and 200 networks totalling more than 1,600 individuals.As the second anniversary of the July the 7th bombings passed, Sir Alan, who has been in the job for a fortnight, spoke of a new reality and urged Britons to become "dobbers" or "snitches" to help authorities safeguard the country. He believes the task ahead is daunting.

ALAN WEST: A lot of people outside the country in the higher echelons of some of these jihadists, I think are influencing our young men and young women in some parts of our society, and we need to think about how we can change that.

JANE HUTCHEON: His comments came after the Muslim Council of Britain held a conference at London's Central Mosque to discuss a response to the threat of terrorism. The MCB claims to represent 60 per cent of British Muslims, but a fracas erupted when conference organisers locked the door on a group of angry young men.(sound of people arguing)Abu Faruk, who's 22, has a long beard and is dressed in battle fatigues.(to Abu Faruk) Are you being allowed in?

ABU FARUK: No, we're being refused entry. Why? Because they're saying it's for invitees only.

JANE HUTCHEON: And which group are you from?

ABU FARUK: We're not from a group, we're just Muslims come together because my Lord tells me to (inaudible) the good from the evil. Because my Lord tells me that even if you help them, even you're allied with them, the Jews and the Christians, they'll never ever be happy with you.

JANE HUTCHEON: The young radicals are believed to be members of the disbanded extremist group al-Muhajiroun affiliated to Lebanon-based Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed. He is barred from entering Britain.The young men are all British-born, devout Muslims and well-educated. They say the Muslim Council are "lackies" and "bootlickers" to the British Government. These men are incensed by Muslim deaths at the hands of coalition forces, and believe that provides the motivation for attacks such as the attempted bombings in London and Glasgow.

VOX POP 1: Where's cause in the resentment? Where's cause in the motivation? You don't think a person wakes up in the morning, and just goes, "I know, I'll go kill innocent people today for a laugh". Where does it come from?

JANE HUTCHEON: Mohammed Shafiq of the Ramadan Foundation was invited to attend the conference. He believes disaffected Muslims need to be heard.

MOHAMMEND SHAFIQ: These young people are totally disenfranchised, and what these people are talking about is they want their voice to be heard. And actually I agree with them. I totally disagree with what they're preaching.

JANE HUTCHEON: What are they preaching?

MOHAMMEND SHAFIQ: Well, they're preaching a lot of, you know, things that… there isn't extremism in this country, that there isn't a problem with terrorism. We all know there is a problem with terrorism, where people are killing them, planting bombs on themselves trying to blow up airports and tube trains. We have a problem, we have to deal with it.

JANE HUTCHEON: In the aftermath of the latest attempted bombings, the Muslim Council of Britain is keen to show solidarity with the security establishment. But as Britain's new Security Minister has acknowledged, tackling fringe elements will be a long, hard struggle. In London, this is Jane Hutcheson for AM.

Action urged over honour killings

More should be to be done to stop women becoming victims of so-called honour crimes, campaigners have said. They spoke out following the conviction of Mahmod Mahmod over the murder of his daughter Banaz.

Her uncle Ari Mahmod was also found guilty of murder after a trial at the Old Bailey. Banaz was strangled with a bootlace and then buried in a suitcase after falling in love with a man her family did not approve of.

Campaign group the Southall Black Sisters has called for a "robust approach" in tackling so-called honour killings and demanded an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission into the case.

Mohammed Shafiq, spokesman for the Ramadhan Foundation, spoke of the group's horror at the case. He said: "We wish to make clear that the illegal practice of forced marriages and honour killings are not from Islam and Islam specifically condemns and forbids them.

"We offer our deepest sympathies to the victim's family and welcome the verdict. "The Ramadhan Foundation today calls on all Mosques, Imams and Muslim organisations to speak up and confront these issues; only with this essential debate can we send the message that this can never be tolerated.

"We will shortly be publishing expert guidance on why Islam forbids this behaviour, how we confront those that practise these issues and we can eradicate them."

It has also emerged that a number of police officers are facing an internal disciplinary investigation over the case amid claims by fellow officers that Banaz would still be alive if she had done her job properly.

Banaz told police she feared for her life four times before she disappeared and even gave them a list of three men she thought would murder her. One of the men she named later admitted to his part in the crime while the other two have fled the country.

During the trial, Detective Inspector Caroline Goode, who led the investigation into Banaz's death, said she had spoken to officers about "mistakes" in dealing with her.

No matter what people do, they will never be able to change Islam!!!!

Over the past few weeks we have watched UK Government Ministers talked about the moderate version of Islam, how these groups should stand up and speak and change Islam. We have never seen Islam changing because Allah has protected the Deen and perserved the faith. No matter what humans may do or try they will ultimately fail as Allah is the best of planners.

This does not mean we in the Muslim community do not have any problems, we have an issue with a very small minority of people who wish to kill innocent people indiscrimnately, they claim to be Muslims but the Scholars are clear that Islam does not sanction the killing of innocent people. We have an Islamic duty to take them on and defeat their views and help them reform because how can our faith be hijacked in this way.

I am proud that the work I have contributed to the debate is welcomed by all sides as principled, honest and frank about the challenges we face. As British citizens we have a duty to ensure that we live by the rule of law and that we celebrate our achievements and contributions to British society either politically, socially, economically etc.

Having said this we have seen a supposely Centre Left Government take away individual civil liberties that took hundreds of years to get and many lives were lost fighting for them. The Government has passed legislation that takes away presumption of innocence and the right to a fair and open trial, we have seen over 22, 000 stop and searches done to minority communities under the Anti Terror laws in London, only 23 arrests, we have seen thousands of innocent people arrested, humilated, discrimanated and tarnished without a single apology. This is no way to defeat terrorism.

The biggest recruiting sargeant for terrorists is the double standards in UK foreign policy, the illegal war in Iraq, the blind support for Israeli aggresision against Palestinians and Lebanonese, Guantanamo Bay, Abu Garib scandal, when we see Muslims lands occupied and our people oppressed people go to the extreme. This is not my view but the view of Sir Michael Jay, Former Permanent Secretary at the Foreign Office who said that by UK going into an illegal war in Iraq the UK was at an increased risk of terrorism.

I have been consistent in my opposition to terrorism and extremism and have also been consistent in opposing the Government on the many issues as described above, I will continue this work regardless.

Britain to emphasise Islamic studies

LONDON (Reuters) - The government announced a new emphasis on Islamic studies on Monday in an attempt to offset fears of extremism but was only able to come up with an extra one million pounds ($2 million) to fund the initiative.

The relatively small boost to funding follows a review of university Islamic studies courses that found that curriculums were frequently out of date or focused on narrow interpretations of Islam.

It also comes amid increasing tension between Britain and its 1.7 million-strong Muslim community, particularly since the July 7, 2005, suicide attacks by young Muslims on London's transport system that killed 52 people.

The subject will now be designated as "strategically important", with an emphasis placed on how and by whom it is taught, and a wider variety of students, including more Muslims, encouraged to study it.

"This would in turn contribute to preventing violent extremism in the name of Islam and improving community cohesion," the department for education said in a statement.
"It is important that the study of Islamic studies within higher education is up to date and focuses on relevant issues."

The initiative follows a government commissioned report which found that Islamic studies teaching at degree level often concentrated too much on a Middle Eastern focus, while ignoring the realities of Islam in modern Britain.

Speaking at an International Conference on Islam and Muslims in London, Prime Minister Tony Blair referred to the need for increased emphasis on Islamic studies, saying the "true voice of Islam" needed to be heard.

"There is an interest and appetite across all sections of society to know more about Islam in all its diversity," Blair said. "This is not, repeat not, about equating interest in Islam with anxiety over extremism. But it explains, in part, the desire to learn about what motivates our Muslim communities."

University administrators welcomed the government's initiative while cautioning that any changes to the curriculum should ensure that "critical intellectual rigour" remains.

"It is important that all academic disciplines follow the normal quality procedures," said Drummond Bone, the president of Universities UK, a vice-chancellors' organisation.

The Ramadan Foundation, a non-politically affiliated Muslim youth organisation, also cautiously welcomed the initiative and Blair's speech, but warned that words would not be enough.

"The government's very good at announcing things... but when it comes to substance there's often not much there," said Mohammed Shafiq, a spokesman for the group.

"You have to judge the prime minister on his record, and the fact is his government has introduced lots of legislation that discriminates against Muslims. What he's done in Iraq and Afghanistan has contributed to terrorism."

Blair sparks row with anti-terror powers bid

LONDON (Reuters) - Civil rights and community groups criticised a proposal by Prime Minister Tony Blair on Sunday to give police broad powers to stop and question people as part of a new anti-terrorism law.
Critics said the proposed measure risked alienating the Muslim community whose support the government needed to combat militants and an opposition politician said Blair was pushing for the powers of a police state.

An interior ministry spokeswoman said the government was looking at including the "stop and question" power in new anti-terrorism legislation.
It would enable police to question people about who they are, where they have been and where they were going, according to the Sunday Times newspaper.
Plans for the measure emerged as Blair, who is due to resign in a month, attacked as a "dangerous misjudgement" Britain's determination to defend civil liberties rather than take tougher action to counter extremists.

"We have chosen as a society to put the civil liberties of the suspect, even if a foreign national, first. I happen to believe this is misguided and wrong," he wrote in the Sunday Times.
Police Minister Tony McNulty said the government would consult widely on its proposals before introducing new legislation in October or November -- by which time Blair will have handed over power to finance minister Gordon Brown.

"We feel that the government's proposals are going to alienate the Muslim community further," he told Reuters.

COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE

Doug Jewell, of civil rights group Liberty, told the BBC the measure was unnecessary and would be counter-productive.

One of Blair's own ministers, Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain, urged caution on new anti-terrorism powers.

"We've got to be very careful that we don't create circumstances that are the domestic equivalent of Guantanamo Bay," he told the BBC, referring to the U.S. prison camp for terrorism suspects on Cuba.

Nick Clegg, of the Liberal Democrats, accused Blair and interior minister John Reid of "pushing for the powers of a police state".

Blair's government passed tough anti-terrorism measures after the September 2001 attacks on U.S. cities and again after four British Muslim suicide bombers killed 52 people on London's transport network in July 2005.

Some measures Blair wanted -- such as a police power to hold terrorism suspects for up to 90 days without charge -- have been blocked by parliament or the courts.
Last week, the government was embarrassed when three men suspected of planning attacks on British or U.S. troops abroad absconded.

A CAMPAIGNING Muslim youth organisation has attacked the government’s suggestion of giving Asbos to people they suspect are involved in terrorism.
The Rochdale-based Ramadhan Foundation said they were "appaled" following the Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith's announcement for plans to use special police and legal teams to target those preaching hate, using anti-social behaviour orders where they cannot be prosecuted.
He said the idea follows the successful use of Asbos to stop animal rights extremists from harassing the public.
Spokesperson for the Foundation, Mohammed Shafiq said: "The fact that this is coming from Lord Goldsmith - the Attorney General - whose role is to ensure that the process of law is being carried out and that the due process reaches its conclusion is appaling.
"This proposal smacks against the right to a free and fair trial and goes against many principles of justice gathered over hundreds of years.
"Those that are suspected of involvement in terrorism and extremism should and must be put on trial and the evidence presented, if they are found guilty, so be it.”

Race hate campaign features swastika stickers

Police have launched an investigation over claims that a neo-nazi gang has launched a campaign of hate in Shawclough.It comes after the Observer was alerted to several fluorescent stickers said to originate from extremist group Combat 18 were posted on lampposts across Heights Lane. Depicting a masked man holding a gun and a swastika logo, the notices warn that the group which has links to violence and arson attacks is ‘in the area’.Ward Councillor Elwyn Watkins visited the alleged crime scene after he was notified by a concerned friend, who had swiftly removed a number of the offensive stickers.He said: “This is a nice area where everyone gets on with everyone. We do not want these racist thugs here. While areas like Burnley and Oldham have been subject to race riots, Rochdale has not. We want it to stay that way.”He added: “I have heard of other cases where stickers such as these have been removed only to find razorblades tucked away underneath. I would urge anyone who sees one of these stickers not to remove them but contact the council’s environmental management department.”Muslim campaigners at the Ramadhan Foundation are also calling for a zero-tolerance approach. Spokesman Mohammed Shafiq said: “We are absolutely appalled by this sort of behaviour. The vast majority of people will not tolerate will not tolerate these thugs, bigots and criminals in Rochdale. I urge the public to stay calm.” The stickers will now be examined by forensic experts, while Rochdale north Inspector Stuart Hey is also asking anyone with information to come forward by calling 0161 856 8523. He said: “We are taking this matter very seriously.”

Attending War crimes Conference in Malaysia

Last week I had the honour of being part of the UK delegation lead by the Ramadhan Foundation to the international Conference organised by the Perdan Global Peace organisation titled "Expose war crimes and Criminalise war", it was hosted by Tun Dr Mohamad Mahathir, 4th Prime Ministerof Malaysia at the Putra World Trace Centre, Kuala Lumpur. It was addressed by renowed international speakers from across the world with personal testimony from victims of war crimes - from Jenin in Palestine to Fallujah in Iraq, taking in Lebanon and Afghanistan.

The main aim of the Conference was to criminalise war and bring those who carried war crimes to justice, it saw a creation of a war crimes tribunal to trial George Bush, Tony Blair, John Howard and the other cronies who are responsible for the killings of many thousands of innocent people.

I was amazed by the humbleness of the Malaysian people, their hospitality and warmth. There commitment to diversity and multi culturalism is evident in the fact all religious holidays for all faiths Christian, Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist are celebrated as public holidays – can you imagine it being like that in the West!!!

An Iraqi prosecutor revealed yesterday that he almost halted the execution of Saddam Hussein because of the behaviour of witnesses who were taunting the condemned man. The Iraqi government announced an inquiry into chaotic scenes at the execution, which the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, condemned as "deplorable".

Munqith al-Faroon, one of the prosecutors in the trial, said two officials who were present at the execution had broken the rules by bringing their mobile phones, which were used to record the event. The leaked footage of the former dictator's final moments has provoked a backlash among Sunni Arabs, who see the execution as an act of sectarian revenge by Iraq's Shia-dominated government.

Mr Faroon said he threatened to leave unless the taunting of Saddam stopped. "They knew that if I left, the execution could not go ahead," he told the Associated Press news agency. Under Iraqi law a prosecution observer must be present.

Mr Prescott avoided any direct criticism of the Iraqi government, which has been embarrassed by the reaction to the recording of the execution. Mr Prescott's comments appeared to reflect growing concern in British government circles about the impact of Saddam's final, public humiliation on Iraq's disaffected Sunni minority.

Up to now, ministers have confined themselves to routine statements that Britain opposes the death penalty, while insisting that it was right that the former dictator should be put on trial. But, Mr Prescott insisted, the secret filming of Saddam's last minutes should be condemned "whatever your views about capital punishment".

"I think the manner was quite deplorable really," Mr Prescott told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. "I don't think one can endorse in any way that, whatever your views about capital punishment. Frankly, to get the kind of recorded messages coming out is totally unacceptable and I think whoever is involved and responsible for it should be ashamed of themselves."

The Government's previous reluctance to comment on the circumstances of the execution angered Labour MPs who opposed the war. The former defence minister, Peter Kilfoyle, condemned Tony Blair's silence on the issue as "yet another error in a long catalogue" on Iraq.

A leading member of the largest Sunni parliamentary bloc said the images damaged Shia Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's attempts at national reconciliation. Saleem al-Jibouri of the Iraqi Accordance Front told Reuters: "The big question is how serious is the government in calling for national reconciliation."

An official of Iraq's Justice Ministry said that some guards appeared to have breached instructions not to bring mobile phones or cameras. He added: "The Iraqi government is going to have an investigation into what happened. This operation should be done with the highest standards of discipline and with respect for the condemned man, both when he's alive and once he's dead. Anything that did not meet those standards should be accounted for." An adviser to Mr Maliki added: "There were a few guards who shouted slogans that were inappropriate and that's now the subject of a government investigation."

I've just returned from the United States where I learnt more about Muslims in the US. The challenges for the UK Muslim community is to be more committed to Homeland secuirty and protecting the United Kingdom from potential extremists and terrorists.

We have to take pride in our nation and the values of freedom and equality. But the Government has to invest in education, this is the biggest tool to defeat the terrorists and extremists.

Veil row: MP is urged to back-track or resign

CONTROVERSY ... MP Phil WoolasA MUSLIM youth organisation has called on MP Phil Woolas to withdraw his words or resign over his comments that a classroom assistant should be sacked for wearing a face-concealing niqab veil.

Local government minister Mr Woolas, whose brief includes race relations, stepped into the row surrounding Aishah Azmi who is facing an industrial tribunal after refusing to remove her veil in front of male colleagues.

The move followed complaints that children at Headfield Church of England School, Dewsbury, found her difficult to understand because they could not see her lips move.

AdvertisementMr Woolas – whose Oldham East and Saddleworth constituency includes Milnrow, Newhey and Shaw – caused a stir after telling the Sunday Mirror that the 23-year-old had ‘put herself in a position where she can’t find a job’ and warned that she could be breaking sex discrimination rules.

Mohammed Shafiq, spokesman for the Rochdale-based Ramadhan Foundation, which describes itself as a youth organisation working for peaceful co-existence and dialogue for all communities, is calling for a climb-down from Mr Woolas.

He said: “We are deeply worried at the constant media frenzy against Islam and Muslims in the UK. There is a debate to have on integration and increasing respect for all people in a free society, but this must not be done in this current climate of fear and demonisation.

“It is absurd the government, via Phil Woolas, is passing judgement on individual cases even before the employment tribunal has had the opportunity to pass judgement.

“Ministers must never interfere in the due process of law. For the racial equality minister to make these comments is deeply worrying and patronising. He should withdraw his remarks or he should resign from the government.

“Contrary to belief Muslims are ready for debate, but we cannot allow this obsession with attacking Islam and the way we practise Islam.”

But Mr Woolas remains unrepentant, saying that he was merely exercising his democratic right as a government minister to speak out.

He said: “This was a judgement for the headteacher and she has made it. The woman was offered a compromise of being able to wear the veil in the staff room, but she refused that offer.

“While I have no problem with people wearing what they want, the children’s education is the most important issue at stake.

“Muslim teachers in that school also do not support the wearing of the veil and it’s a big mistake for some people to assume that the Muslim community has a homogenous view.”

Mr Mohammed Shafiq responds to John Prescott's appearance on BBC Sunday AM where he discussed the wearing of the veil, he is absolutely right that Muslim women should be free to choose how they should dress. This is a major part of a free society if you take this away you are left on the path to a nanny state.

I welcome the Government's reassurance that they do not intend to introduce any legislation to ban the veil in the United Kingdom. I praise those Ministers like Ruth Kelly, Patricia Hewitt, Alan Johnson and Tessa Jowell who have taken the extraordinarily step to speak against a Fellow Cabinet Minister.

IT’S really nice to meet you face-to-face, Mr Straw,’ said this pleasant lady, in a broad Lancashire accent.She had come to my constituency advice bureau with a problem. I smiled back. ‘The chance would be a fine thing,’ I thought to myself but did not say out loud. The lady was wearing the full veil. Her eyes were uncovered but the rest of her face was in cloth.Her husband, a professional man whom I vaguely knew, was with her. She did most of the talking. I got down the detail of the problem, told the lady and her husband that I thought I could sort it out, and we parted amicably.All this was about a year ago. It was not the first time I had conducted an interview with someone in a full veil, but this particular encounter, though very polite and respectful on both sides, got me thinking. In part, this was because of the apparent incongruity between the signals which indicate common bonds – the entirely English accent, the couples’ education (wholly in the UK) – and the fact of the veil. Above all, it was because I felt uncomfortable about talking to someone “face-to-face” who I could not see.So I decided that I wouldn’t just sit there the next time a lady turned up to see me in a full veil, and I haven’t.Now, I always ensure that a female member of my staff is with me. I explain that this is a country built on freedoms. I defend absolutely the right of any woman to wear a headscarf. As for the full veil, wearing it breaks no laws.I go on to say that I think, however, that the conversation would be of greater value if the lady took the covering from her face. Indeed, the value of a meeting, as opposed to a letter or ‘phone call, is so that you can – almost literally – see what the other person means, and not just hear what they say.I thought it may be hard going when I made my request for face-to-face interviews in these circumstances. However, I can’t recall a single occasion when a lady has refused to lift her veil; most seem relieved I have asked.Last Friday was a case in point. The veil came off almost as soon as I opened my mouth. I dealt with the problems the lady had brought to me. We then had an interesting debate about veil wearing. This contained some surprises. It became absolutely clear to me that the husband had played no part in her decision. She had read books and thought about the issue. She felt more comfortable wearing the veil when out. People bothered her less.OK, I said, but did she think that veil wearing was required by the Koran? I was no expert, but many Muslim scholars said that the full veil was not obligatory at all. And women as well as men went head uncovered the whole time when in their Hajj – pilgrimage – in Mecca. The husband chipped in to say that this matter was ‘more cultural than religious’. I said I would reflect on what the lady had said to me. Would she, however, think hard about what I said – in particular about my concern that wearing the full veil was bound to make better, positive relations between the two communities more difficult. It was such a visible statement of separation and of difference.I thought a lot before raising this matter a year ago, and still more before writing this. But if not me, who? My concerns could be misplaced. But I think there is an issue here.

Straw comments stir controversy

Debate is going on with the Muslim communitySome Muslim groups have attacked Jack Straw over comments on the veil, although one of the main bodies has expressed understanding.
The Islamic Human Rights Commission said he was selectively discriminating. But the Muslim Council of Britain said Mr Straw's views were understandable.
One Muslim human rights campaigner praised Mr Straw's stance, but a local mosque said it was "insensitive".
Islamic Human Rights Commission chairman Massoud Shadjareh said: "It is astonishing that someone as experienced and senior as Jack Straw does not realise that the job of an elected representative is to represent the interests of the constituency, not to selectively discriminate on the basis of religion."
Mr Shadjareh compared Mr Straw's stance to asking an Orthodox Jew to remove their religious clothing.

But Dr Daud Abdullah, of the Muslim Council of Britain, said Mr Straw's views were understandable.

"This veil does cause some discomfort to non-Muslims. One can understand this.
"Even within the Muslim community the scholars have different views on this. There are those who believe it is obligatory for the Muslim woman to cover her face.
"Others say she is not obliged to cover up. It's up to the woman to make the choice.
"Our view is that if it is going to cause discomfort and that can be avoided, then it can be done. The veil over the hair is obligatory."
Oppression symbol
Muslim Labour peer Baroness Uddin said she defended Mr Straw's right to speak on the issue but said his choice to do so had been a mistake.
"He's walked into the latest onslaught on Muslim communities and by citing Muslim women into this arena without doing all the groundwork to make sure that Muslim women are a full part of society.
"The greater British public will support him and I support his right to speak but I think that Muslim women have become the symbol of oppression and of fear."
Muslim human rights campaigner Ahlam Akram said Mr Straw had "hit the nail on the head".
"I stick to the argument that in this insecure world we are living today, I would rather prefer women coming to the UK - or even living in the UK - to respect the culture as well here.
"At the moment covering the face is a threat because I don't know who is underneath that veil or underneath the whole thing."
'Misconceived' comments
The Lancashire Council of Mosques said Mr Straw had "misunderstood" the issue and it was "deeply concerned".
"For such a seasoned and astute politician to make such a comment that has shocked his Muslim constituents seems ill-judged and misconceived.
"We fully support the right of Muslim women to choose to follow this precept of their faith in adopting the full veil, which causes no harm to anyone."
By requesting the removal of veils which cover the face, Mr Straw was denying Muslim constituents proper access to their MP.
Mr Straw has not suggested he would not talk to Muslims who choose to continue wearing the veil through the conversation.

The Labour party is in total turmoil, Tony Blair is forced to annouce that he is standing down as leader of the Labour party, the one thing he refused to do.

He is a lame duck Prime Minister, i think he should go now.

David Cameron and the environment

Today the Friends of Earth and the Conservatives called for the Government to introduce a bill in the Queens speech tackling pollution and carbon emissions, this Government has failed to deal with this issue effectively in the past nine years.

What is surprising is that the Conservatives have been silent on this issue for so long and now Dave is in favour, well about time too!!!

The Liberal Democrats look forward to the Conservatives actually announcing some policies on the environment, we are the only party to have consistent policies and records on the environment.

I have been watching David Cameron he is just a new Blair, very big on PR and Spin, no substance, I think since being leader he only has three policies.

In my eyes they still the most bigoted and racist party and that will never change, remember eighteen years of misrule.

However on a positive note I welcome the support from Dave Cameron and hope the Government also be forthcoming with support on this issue, this should be cross party.

This was taken at the Town Hall where we celebrated the 100 days of Lib Dem power in Rochdale.

I spent some time with him, drove him this morning to the station for his station.

I've started to change my view of him, he's not that bad.

Drug campaign on radio

A ROCHDALE community organisation tackling drug problems was the subject of a radio documentary.Ramadhan Foundation were followed by BBC Five Live for six months documenting their 'United Against Drugs' campaign.The Foundation, which also teamed up with Deen4All and Wardleworth for All, have been tackling drugs abuse by talking to drug dealers about the dangers of their activities in the community.They also waged a campaign against prostitution, reducing the number of street workers in the Deeplish area of the town.

Said spokesperson Mohammed Shafiq: "The Radio Five showed the world the other side of Muslims - the community focused people who want to clean the area of drugs and prostitution."Despite receiving death threats from certain people, we feel our campaign has had a big impact in the community."Prostitutes know they are not welcome and will be driven out and therefore we see less of them as well as the drug dealers."

Chairman of Ramadhan Foundation, Muhammad Umar added: "We thank the BBC for giving us the opportunity to show the listeners the work we are doing."

The government pinned its sights on reform but the taskforce it set up says it has been let down, writes Jon Ungoed-Thomas
In an Oldham mosque Mohammed Shafiq, a worker for an educational foundation, recently stood before the devotees and made a heartfelt plea. Young Muslims, he said, should confront violent extremism in the heart of their community.

This battle, according to Shafiq, starts with an acknowledgment. “We have to recognise that within the Muslim community there is a small number of people who are hellbent on committing mass murder,” he said. “9/11 was not a Jewish conspiracy and Tony Blair was not behind the July 7 attacks. There are people in our community who want to kill innocent people.”

It is a stark message and Shafiq, who works for the Ramadhan Foundation, which aims to improve the education of young Muslims, admits that genuine change in the Muslim community could take a long time.

Shock waves through Labour and the Conservatives

Last night the By election results sent shockwaves through the Labour and Conservatives parties, Labour failed to re gain the Blaenau Gwent seat in south Wales and mainwhile the Conservatives held Bromley and Chislehurst with a reduced majority from 13,342 votes to 633 by the Lib Dems.

Bromley was one of the safest seats in the country for the Tories, if David Cameron can not sustain the results in Bromley he is in serious trouble.

The Lib Dems have ran a positive campaign based on the principles of protecting civil liberties and devolving power to local people. You all know I have no confidence in Ming Campbell leadership, but this result certainly covers over the problems we face at this difficult time. Ming Campbell can honestly say that the council election results are not a test of his leadership he is seriously mistaken.

I am considering the possibility of attacking Ming at this years Party conference, watch this space.

Well done to the By Election team in both Wales and London for such a good campaign, you did us proud!!!!

Theres been a reshuffel in the home office, Tony Mcnulty is replaced by a two week hold minister Liam Byrne, he just arrived two weeks ago.

Foreign criminals are on the lose, we dont know how many, the CRB are giving false record checks to innocent people and the IND officials are offering visas for sex, how worse can it get?

Ming Campbell is on notice

The election results were very bad for the lib Dems, we should have made serious gains against Labour in their heartlands, Ming Campbell has said this was not a test of his leadership well I think it is, he is failing to take the party forward and is struggling against the youthful Blair and Cameron.

In Prime Ministers Questions he is failing to make an impact, I think he has until the Autumn Conference to improve things - if he fails to do this then there is sadly no option but for him to resign, the Liberal Democrats cannot be on a sliding scale down, it is only up we need to go.

Last night there was council elections in England, the Liberal Democrats did excellent in Rochdale, we took seats from Labour and held two seats against the Tories. We did however lose Shah Wazir, our Deputy Leader in Central and Falinge.

Can I just pay tribute to him for all the work he did and I know he will be back.

I hope that this is the beginning for the Councillor election myself in 2007, watch this space.

The lib dems did horrendus in this election, consolidation is not the goal, we should be making gains against Labour, God help us!!!!!!!!!!

It has just been announced that Sir Menzies Campbell has been elected as leader of the Liberal Democrats. Chris Huhne was second and Simon Hughes came third. Whilst you are all aware that I supported Simon Hughes I still believe that the leadership election has put us in a very strong position to challenge for the next election.

I will not deny that I am disappointed that Simon Hughes did not win, I believe that he is one of those people who was the best leader that the party never had. I am glad that Ming has been elected and I look to working with Ming and the team to reach for the sky.

Ming will have to show that he is serious about making the party representative of the community we aspire to lead. I believe it is sick and shameful that we do not have a single Ethnic Minority Member of Parliament, we need action on this now.

But that debate is for the future, today we congratulate Ming and his team especially Maxine!!! And I offer my support to Simon and Chris, you both have great talent and the party is stronger as a result of your work.

Simon Hughes is still best choice

In three days time we will have a new leader for the libdems, I hope it is Simon Hughes as he has the strength and commitment to liberal values to put the party in a stronger position to face the challenges ahead.

Over the six week campaign Simon has shown his amazing knowledge of all areas and strong belief in taking the party forward.

However who ever is elected will have my support and commitment, bring it on David Cameron!!!

Tomorrow over 500 000 people will gather in London for a peaceful demonstration the cartoons that were published. This was pure hatred for Islam and Muslims, we must fight these people intellectually and in peaceful ways.

Let there be no defence of this despicable crime and let those people who carried out apologies for the sake of inter community relations.

The second issue I want to touch on is the current allegations against the Rochdale Committee for Islamic Affairs, this was set up recently and claims to be representative and also independent of party politics. This surprises me as the three main figures are active in the Labour Party, they have no Lib Dems or Conservatives on the group and also very selective in the work they carry out and people they have on the committee.

We the real Muslim representatives will shortly gather to begin the process to set up a new Group called Rochdale Muslim Council, it will have representatives from Mosques, community groups, voluntary organisations and individual Muslims in Rochdale. We will intend to show then how it is done. I abhor those that attack me and my party but on my face they are all nice, lets see an end to this.

Lib Dem in disarray!!!!

Having watched in frustation at the way the party is being shredded down to positions that are no longer registering on the political scale. I have honestly stated my views on Simon Hughes on many occasions, I worked with him for some time and felt I knew him well enough, his announcement yesterday came as a shock to me, I was not aware of this and nor do I have a position on his private life. I do however believe that the party seriously needs to get its act together, we have been stuffed by the parliamentary party and they have destroyed any chance of the lib dems getting into Government.

In May thousands of lib dem activists that are the strength and soul of the party will try to salvage something out of this mess, I think it will take us years to do this, I have along with various colleagues considered my position in the party and have reached the conclusion that the fight for the heart of the party is best fought within it, My future is within the party, people have to recongnise that the party and what it stands for is bigger than any one individual.

I will be in Brussels next week and will meet Lib Dem Parliamentarians to discuss how we move forward, there is a lot of work to do and I intend to play my role in that. I will use the Party Conference in Spring to make my views known on the crisis very clear, the party has been hugely damaged on this issue and it will take a lot of action to rectify.

I hope this is the end of the matter and we can get on in debating the real issues, policy and what the party can offer Britain, to build a society that is tolerant and respectful of human rights and diversity, this is what we can achieve together if only we can try.

Lib Dem in Crisis

Todays news about Mark Oaten is really sad and challenging for the party, he accepts he has done wrong and has resigned as Home Affairs Spokesman, I hope this is the end of it. He needs privacy to deal with it with his family. I hope the media will leave him to it. Politics in the UK is a brutal game and today more people will be turned off coming into politics.

However we now need to have a strong leader, who can bring the party together and look to the future. Simon Hughes has the talent, strength, principles to lead the party towards the challenges ahead, I sincerely hope that the party will make the right choice so we can build for the future.

With Cameron's arrival on the scene, I think we will lose seats to the Tories at the next election, at the last election we achieved over 100 second places where next time we can win, these were all in Labour seats, we do not need to move to the right I think the best direction is to the left of New Labour, this is where we will win seats at the next election.

To that effect it is Simon Hughes who should be best for the leadership.
